House Beautiful has featured Costco’s Borealis Murphy Bed, also called the “Illusion” bed, as a furniture option for occasional guests. The article lists a $1,099.99 price, a queen-size tri-fold foam mattress, pull-out side tables and storage; current availability and price may vary.

House Beautiful has spotlighted Costco’s Borealis Murphy Bed, also referred to as the “Illusion” bed, as a cabinet-style option for households that need an occasional guest bed. The report lists the queen-size model at $1,099.99 and says it includes a foam mattress, pull-out side tables and storage when folded away.

The Borealis is designed to serve as both a bed and a credenza-style cabinet. House Beautiful says the cabinet has storage and is intended to look more like ordinary furniture when the bed is not in use. The article suggests placing a lamp or vase on top to make the piece fit more naturally into a room, though that is styling advice rather than a product specification.

The report describes a 60-by-80-inch tri-fold queen mattress made from six-inch-thick foam. It characterizes the mattress as medium-firm, hypoallergenic and latex-free, with a cover made of 100% polyester. House Beautiful says the mattress should be left to expand for 48 hours after setup before reaching its normal size.

The bed is made from wood with a laminate or melamine finish, according to the article. Other listed features include leg levelers for uneven floors and pull-out side tables for bedside items. House Beautiful notes that similar Murphy beds are sold elsewhere, including on Amazon, but the source does not provide a direct comparison of their prices or specifications.

A Guest Bed That Folds Into Storage

For people who host only occasionally, a dedicated bed can take up useful floor space for most of the year. A cabinet bed aims to address that trade-off by converting a piece of furniture into a sleeping area when needed, while leaving the room available for other uses when it is folded away. That may make the format relevant to spare rooms, basements or multipurpose spaces.

The listed price of $1,099.99 puts the Borealis above the cost of a basic air mattress, but the package described by House Beautiful includes a queen foam mattress and built-in furniture features. Whether that represents good value depends on a buyer’s needs, room layout, assembly requirements and alternatives available locally. The article’s endorsement is a shopping assessment, not an independent test of mattress comfort or long-term durability.

What the House Beautiful Report Lists

The source report frames the bed as a purchase to consider before holiday hosting, when households may need sleeping space for visiting relatives or friends. It contrasts the cabinet-style design with Murphy beds whose storage cabinets can be visually prominent, and presents the Borealis as a more discreet option when folded.

House Beautiful also says Costco products can be difficult to find at nearby stores and points readers toward similar styles sold online. The source does not establish whether the Borealis is available at every Costco location, whether the listed price applies nationally, or whether delivery and assembly are included. Those details can affect the total cost and practicality of buying the bed.

Stock, Price and Setup Details

The source material does not confirm current inventory, delivery availability, regional pricing or whether the $1,099.99 listing remains current. It also does not provide details on warranty coverage, assembly service, weight limits, cabinet dimensions, mattress certification or how difficult it is to convert the unit between bed and cabinet. Buyers should check Costco’s current listing and product documentation for those specifications before ordering.

Comfort and durability are not independently established in the report. The article describes the mattress as medium-firm and hypoallergenic, but does not cite testing or explain the basis for those descriptions. The product’s suitability will also depend on available floor space and the room’s layout when the bed is opened.

Check the Listing Before Buying

The next step for interested shoppers is to verify the Borealis bed’s current price, stock and delivery terms through Costco, then review the manufacturer’s dimensions and setup guidance. Because the mattress is reported to need 48 hours to expand, buyers should account for that wait before planning a guest’s arrival.

House Beautiful says it found similar styles on Amazon, but the supplied report does not identify an equivalent model or establish that those alternatives match the Borealis’s mattress, storage or side-table features. A like-for-like comparison will require checking each product’s measurements, included components and return terms.
